# Handles

Your handle (`@yourname`) is a human-friendly name that represents your account. People can pay you with it instead of reading, copying, or mistyping a long EVM address.

***

## Picking a handle

You choose a handle when you sign up, and you can switch to a different one later in **Settings → Handle** if the new name is free.

* 3 to 20 characters long
* Only letters, numbers, and underscores
* Matching is case-insensitive, but your handle is shown with the capitalization you picked

***

## How a handle is resolved

Sectoral keeps an off-chain record linking `@yourname` to your public Robinhood Chain address. When someone pays a handle:

1. The app looks up the address behind `@yourname`.
2. The transfer is built and signed the normal way, addressed to your real Robinhood Chain account.
3. The handle is never written on-chain. What settles is an ordinary transfer from one address to another.

Handles add convenience without adding anyone new you have to trust. The underlying payment has the same guarantees laid out in [How Amounts Stay Encrypted](/privacy-and-cryptography/encrypted-amounts.md): friendly on the surface, cryptographically secured underneath.

## Handles for agents

An agent account gets a handle nested under its parent's, like `@yourname/agent-name`. If software is spending money, it is important to know that, and the nested format makes it clear, both to the payer and in your own feed, that an autonomous system made the payment and not a person. Learn more in [Wallets for Agents](/ai-agents/agent-wallets.md).

## Switching handles

When you change your handle, your previous one becomes available to other users after a brief holding period. From then on, request links that use the old handle will no longer resolve. Your Robinhood Chain address does not change, so any history tied directly to your address remains intact. Names can change; what is recorded on-chain cannot.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.sectoral.xyz/using-sectoral/handles.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
